Fine Art Appraisals
Appraising unique pieces of art is a blend of both science and art. If you are looking to value your art primarily for
your own needs, and you are researching a typical piece from a popular artist, you can do research on your own to get an idea of what
your art is worth. There are several websites that have databases of art prices:
For items of greater value (and for insurance and IRS purposes), you'll want to retain a qualified
appraiser. Many appraisers can give you a quick verbal or written appraisal on most pieces. For more in-depth needs, you should hire an
appraiser to spend the extra time. Some can cost a few hundred or several hundred an hour, but are worth it if you are making, or have,
a large investment in art.
Insuring Your Fine Art
Many heartbreaks could be avoided if everyone properly insured their prized possessions. Many people
underinsure their art collections, and they also don't take the time to fully understand what their insurance contract states. This can
lead to surprises at the time of a loss- make sure you understand what valuation your insurance contract places on your
art.
